Graduate student positions

The best preparation for graduate work in my group is an undergraduate degree in engineering, math, or physics and a fascination with the ocean. The closing date for applications to receive full consideration for fellowships is typically mid-December. Students interested in working in my lab should contact me by email (jrosman@unc.edu) during the summer or fall, prior to submitting their application.

Undergraduate student opportunities

We often have opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct research in my lab as part of the fall Morehead City Field Site, an honors thesis, or for summer research. These opportunities are best suited to students interested in applying math and physics to understand marine systems, and typically involve a combination of field work and computer programming. Students develop skills such as representing environmental processes mathematically, using computer models, and writing computer code to analyze data and simulate processes.

Examples of possible research areas include:

• Wave transformation and circulation on reefs and rocky bottoms
• Circulation and oxygen dynamics in wind forced estuaries
